What Makes Social and Economic Development Work

Beyond Interfaith Dialogue to Interfaith Friendships
Mohammed AL Samawi, a Muslim from Yemen, overcame religious prejudice and founded the Abrahamic House, a multifaith incubator for social change. His journey began when he befriended a Christian teacher and discovered commonalities between religions. He faced persecution for his interfaith activism in Yemen, but eventually escaped and arrived in the United States as a refugee. He went on to write his autobiography, “The Fox Hunt,” and founded the Abrahamic House to promote interfaith dialogue and understanding. The house brings together young people from different religions to live and serve together, with a focus on community service, human connection, and sharing both joys and pain with each other. The Abrahamic House celebrates religious diversity and aims to inspire others to build similar spaces of interfaith dialogue.

Exploring the Lives of the Central Figures of the Baha’i Faith
The Baha’i Faith recognizes three central figures: The Bab, Bahau’llah, and Abdul-Baha. The Bab, meaning “the Gate,” was the forerunner of Bahau’llah and prepared the people for his coming. Bahau’llah, the prophet-founder of the Baha’i Faith, taught that all religions come from the same source and emphasized the unity of all people. Abdul-Baha, the eldest son of Bahau’llah, was appointed as the successor of the Baha’i Faith and continued his father’s teachings, promoting social justice and international peace. Together, these three central figures are associated with the Heroic Age of the Baha’i Faith, a period that came to a close with the passing of Abdul-Baha. Their teachings and legacies continue to inspire and guide Baha’is around the world.
The Bab
In the 19th century, the Báb, a young merchant from Iran, announced that he was the bearer of a message that would transform the life of humanity. His message of spiritual and moral reformation, along with his attention to improving the position of women and the poor, quickly attracted thousands of followers. The Báb founded a distinct, independent religion of his own and inspired his followers to transform their lives and carry out great acts of heroism. His mission was to prepare the way for the coming of Bahá’u’lláh, a Manifestation of God who would usher in an age of peace and justice promised in all the world’s religions. The Báb’s life is considered one of the most magnificent examples of courage in human history.
Baha’u’llah
The need for a unifying vision of the nature of man and society is crucial as the new millennium approaches. The writings of Bahá’u’lláh, a 19th-century prophetic figure, provide such a vision. Bahá’u’lláh claimed to be the Messenger of God to the age of human maturity, with a Divine Revelation that fulfills promises made in earlier religions and that will unify the peoples of the world. The effects of Bahá’u’lláh’s life and writings have already had a significant impact, with a global community representing a microcosm of the human race. This documentation is available for general scrutiny and should command the earnest attention of anyone who believes in the spirituality of human nature and the need for this aspect of reality to inform the coming organization of our planet.
Abdu’l-Baha
‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the eldest Son of Bahá’u’lláh, was a leading exponent of the Bahá’í Faith in the early 20th century. He was recognized as a champion of social justice and an ambassador for international peace. Bahá’u’lláh established ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as the authorized interpreter of the Bahá’í Writings and the perfect exemplar of the Faith’s spirit and teachings. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá devoted his ministry to furthering his Father’s Faith and promoting the ideals of peace and unity. He encouraged the establishment of local Bahá’í institutions and guided educational, social, and economic initiatives. Through a series of journeys, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá presented Bahá’u’lláh’s prescription for the spiritual and social renewal of society to people of all backgrounds.
